Perhaps the most famous prop weapon in the history of movies is the lightsaber, used by both the brave Jedi Knights and the evil Sith Lords, in George Lucas’s Star Wars film series. The original props seen in A New Hope were scratch built from old camera-flash battery packs and miscellaneous hardware. Perhaps not surprisingly, the exact battery packs used are now invariably difficult to find, due to collectors wishing to “remake” the original props. Later films used custom machined designs, although in some cases components from earlier models were re-used, such as part of Obi-Wan’s lightsaber being used as the basis for Luke’s lightsaber seen in the final film.

The lightsaber effect seen in the movies is entirely done in post-production, even on the original films, with the film frames individually painted over to produce the pulsing glow. This was not the original intention however, as the initial plan was to use spinning blades coated with alternating patches of reflective material, and mount a directional light beside the camera, so that the blades would physically reflect back the light. In practice the end result wasn’t particularly effective, so the post-production option was taken instead.

Inevitably there have been numerous plastic toy versions released down the years, and a whole other article could probably be written about collecting those. Sometimes the terms “collectible memorabilia,” “collectibles” and “memorabilia” are used interchangeably, as they signify the same general concept.  They are all items that, for a number of different reasons, are desirable to collectors and are able to be found, inherited or purchased in order to be accumulated into large or small collections.  But to be precise, collecting can be a fun hobbie or a serious hobby. A Property Master (or Prop Master) is the person in charge of providing or creating all of the props, costumes, and background objects that are to be used in a movie production. Any item that has a dependable COA will have greater value and resell ability. Keep in mind that COAs can also be forged, so ask for pictures of the COA if they are not already provided by the seller. Be wary of items that have shaky provenance with descriptions like “I originally bought this item from a guy at a yard sale who swore it was used in Spider-Man”.

*Buy from trusted sellers. There are several companies that deal exclusively with movie props who sell their wares on eBay. For example, Premiere Props and the Prop Store of London are both high profile prop and wardrobe dealers who work directly with the movie studios. Everything they sell comes with a COA and can be guaranteed authentic. In the cases where an independent seller is auctioning an item you are interested in, check their other listings and their feedback. Do they have a history of selling other movie props? Do they have a lot of negative feedback? If they do, do any of the negative comments have to do with unhappy buyers receiving badly damaged, fake, or merchandise that did not arrive as described?

*Try out eBay’s Live Auctions. Live Auctions are relatively new on eBay, and provide opportunities for internet users to have access to live events at actual licensed auction houses. Instead of an auction being listed for several days with bids being placed all during that time, a live auction works exactly as if were standing in the room where the auction was taking place. There are many different categories for Live Auctions and there are many opportunities to buy very rare movie props and costumes.
